On The Cover… Mike Terry

I was born in 1962, in a little town called Moulton, Alabama, not far from the Tennessee River. Which is about 1.5 hours south of Nashville, TN.

I’ve always listened to country music, it’s in my blood! It’s what I know, it’s what I feel! It’s who I am! Growing up listening to Merle Haggard, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty and singing along with their records with a hair brush in my hand, for a microphone! This is where I learned how songs were constructed.

I’ve been singing all my life. From the time I started the 1st grade through the 9th grade I was always in my schools chorus group. My chorus instructors always wanted me to sing a solo, but I was always to shy! I wrote my first song in 1974, when I was around 12 years old, one day while cutting my families grass. It was called “Love, Freezes Me Up”. I don’t remember most of the verses, but I do remember the chorus!

My grandmother bought me my first acoustic guitar when I was in the 6th grade. It sat in a corner most of the time. I rarely picked it up. I’m not sure whatever happen to it! When I started the 9th grade, I must have been about 14 years old and for Christmas that year my parents bought me an Aria electric guitar and a Fender amp! This was when my interest in learning to play the guitar really started. I bought every guitar music book I could. The ones that had the sheet music along with the lyrics and guitar chord pictures too. I spent many hours playing the songs in them and singing along, in my bedroom. But, that as far as it went until I turned around 20 years.
